Charlie’s Hidden Gem

A most eclectic collection of cars and automobile paraphernalia is a hidden gem on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, and it has a genuine Supercars connection.

Featuring over 80 different vehicles, Charlie’s Auto Museum has been steadily growing since it first opened in 1988 by Charlie Schwerkolt, but not necessarily the Charlie Schwerkolt the Australian motorsport public all know.

When Charlie junior took over the family’s forklift business, his father’s pet project became the museum, which can now be found near the popular attractions of Arthur’s Seat, which in itself has a remarkable motorsport history.

The winding tourist drive of the area was used for competition during the 1930s, with Schwerkolt one of the drivers behind a hillclimb being revived on the road, with the reborn event promoted by the Austin 7 Club between 1992 and 2000.

The Schwerkolt family connection flows into the collection, with numerous show cars from the Team 18 and DJR eras capped by James Courtney’s 2010 Championship winning DJR Falcon.

Elsewhere on display are numerous unique and contrasting pieces.

For instance, a classic USA Cord against Bond Bugs. Messerschmitts, Reliant Robins and Jaguars. Goggomobils, Jeeps, MGs, Holdens, Skodas, and much more – there’s a very good chance you will find something that tickles your fancy in the mix.

Charlie’s Auto Museum can be found at 175 Purves Road in Arthurs Seat, and is open daily from 10:30am to 4:30pm.
