POWER RANKINGS: ALL THE FEELINGS EDITION

THIS WEEK, we are proud to bring to you The Race Torque Power Rankings powered by Yellow Cover: Feelings Edition.

WORDS: Team TRT (Richard Craill / Mark Walker / Dale Rodgers / Tony Schibeci) + Social Contributors

FROM EPIC family reunions, to long distance Father’s Day messages, to hurt feelings on the race track, team tactics and spicy jabs, to hot hard racing, the Townsville 2.0 Hot, Not and What hits you right in the feels.

So strap in, we’re on the home stretch now, and things are starting to fire up…

HOT

1. THIS VIDEO

NO WORDS needed. Just watch.

2. FATHER’S DAY AWAY FROM HOME

Who’s chopping the onions?

3. THE OLD RED BULL ONE-TWO + RESULTING BANTER

DURING the two Sydney rounds things were all nice and rosy and ‘how good is it to be back’ and ‘good for the sport’. At Darwin things started to fire up and now things are properly serious. Nothing wrong with some biffo and nor is there some spite between the two best teams in the game. Please cue a Monte Burns-style ‘Excellent’.

4. JAMIE: SHOTS FIRED

IN FORM, fired up and refusing to give up in his drive for Eight, Jamie really only said what a lot of people were thinking..

5. BJR QUALIFYING

THE WAY this team continues to punch, punch and punch some more has been one of the stories of the 2020 season, and the way they dominated qualifying on Sunday was almost McLaughlin-like. Notable that the two SA drivers are peaking right before they head to home turf, too..

6. TRIPLE EIGHT 200

THE BEST team in the modern era of Australian Touring Car Racing notched up their 200th championship win on the weekend. Remarkable.

7. PARITY

HASN’T been talked about. Supercars’ technical department copped plenty last year, and then again during the re-homologation of both cars, but turns out they knew what they were doing it. Admit it, right now you’re thinking: ‘Oh yeah, I haven’t thought about parity all year..’.

8. RETURN OF RACECAM

YOU ASK, we agree. Will Brown’s performance in the Excel also a standout. Anyone who says ‘I’m sweating my balls off in here’ on live TV gets a gig here.

9. RACE 24

WHAT an absolute belter. Had everything from wheel-to-wheel racing, some great passes, controversial moments, team strategy plays, a late Safety Car working for some and not for others and some real needle at the end between the key title rivals. Not sure what else you want from a motor race.

10. SCOTT PYE’S MONTH.

Across 12 races, the DeWalt driver has bashed out the following:

316221333996965

That, we think you will agree, is very solid work and along the way has got huge amounts of TV coverage for his sponsors. Sure, it’s because he doesn’t qualify very well, but mainly it’s because he’s carving people up as he marches forward in each race. Outstanding.

11. HYUNDAI EXCELS

YOU KNOW the TRT are fans of the Excels, so as if they weren’t going to make it in?

WHAT?

PRE-FLIGHT VIDEO, COVID-SPEC

Nicely done!

WHAT?

SAY WHAT?

NOT

1. EREBUS

REYNOLDS: DNF, 15th and 11th. Anton? 5th, 15th and a DNF. Townsville did not agree with Erebus Motorsport and really, Darwin didn’t either. In 12 races Reynolds scored just FOUR top 10 finishes, only two of them in the top five. Anton’s strike rate was better but even he missed the top-10 on three occasions from 12. They’ve slipped to eighth in the team’s championship while Reynolds is at risk of being passed by Scott Pye in the drivers; which would bump him out of the Top 10. Rough.

2. COMMENTARY CHEERLEADING

What do you think? A bit much? Plenty of comments agreed..

3. NO GARRY, NO!

THIS was a hugely awkward moment that was not a particularly good look..

4. CARS STALLING

WHAT is it with all the stalling going on this year. If anything, starts should be perfect given they’re getting more regular practice than ever but it seems to be getting worse. At some point, someone is going to be drilled hard.

5. WATERS WEEKEND ENDS

UNFORTUNATE incident, but makes the ‘Not’ for the way Waters weekend ended, rather than the incident itself. Nothing he nor the car behind could do – just one of those things – but the Monster Mustang has been in form late so this was a shame.

6. KELLY RACING

A weekend to forget to the hard working Kelly Racing boys. Rick showed some good car speed but Andre had a shocker and battled near the rear of field when he was not in the garage.

7. SVG POWERING STEERING BLUES

Far from ideal, and big in the overall picture for the weekend result. Remember, that Team’s Championship is getting nice and cosy…

8. COMPLAINING ABOUT TEAM ORDERS

The needle between the teams is good, but sometimes it should be remembered that it’s often like the pot calling the kettle black.

9. SINGLE CAR TWO CAR TEAMS

Jamie was right: There are several teams that need their second cars to step up to the plate in the team title fight.

Triple Eight are leading the team’s title because their drivers are splitting the load: Jamie has scored 55% of their points and Shane 45% and as van Gisbergen finds form you can only feel like that contribution will increase.

Meanwhile, at DJR Team Penske, McLaughlin has 61% of their team’s total and Coulthard just 39%.

Further down, a battle is evolving between Team 18, Walkinshaw and BJR for fifth in the team’s standing and right now Clayton lads need Bryce Fullwood to step up – as Chaz Mostert has hauled in 62% of all their points.

Meanwhile, at Team 18 it’s even contributions from both drivers: 52% – 48% for Winterbottom and Pye respectively. Down the road at BJR Percat and Hazelwood are slightly less even, contributing 58% and 42% to their team’s total, respectively.

Apologies for putting some actual journalism in the rankings. Usual service resumes.. now.

10. MONTH OVER?

After a solid month of Supercars, it’s going to be awkward to have to find other things to do next weekend.

Remind us again: What do you use a Saturday and Sunday for if not motor racing?
