Wild Times at Phillip Island States

Four Seasons in One Day was a classic Crowded House song that described the tremendous weather swings in Melbourne. Phillip Island is not in Melbourne.

Situated somewhat closer to the South Pole, the Island copped the brunt of the early wintery blast that brought snow to low lying parts of Victoria over the weekend, with the Vic State Race Series event at the Grand Prix Circuit often turned inside out and back to front… multiple times in any given race.

From bright sunshine one minute, to horizontal rain the next, the weather mix kept teams and drivers on their toes.

What it did result in was plenty of action from the bumper program, with big grids the order of the event.

One notable winner was third-generation racer Clay Richards, below, who broke through for his maiden state Formula Ford race win.

Who would have ever guessed that Jim Richards grandson would be entirely competent in the rain?

Not the greatest photo of all time, but this is what happens when in the time between the warm-up lap and turn one of the race, it buckets rain, but only in turn one. It was like the good old days of HQs: everyone in strife!
