AUSGP: Saturday Notebook
You know how we told you the crowd yesterday was big? Read on to see what a properly massive crowd looks like…
Also – don’t forget to lodge your Doric Power Rankings nominations – we want to know your Hot/Not/What, from at home, and the track.
Hit us up on the socials @theracetorque, and stay tuned during the week…
A sea of humanity
Melbourne tends to bang on about being the world centre of sport, and here’s why.
There isn’t a centimetre of fence line that doesn’t feature multiple people deep – and we’ve checked all of it.
This crowd is seriously impressive, yes, the queues are massive, and yes the phone reception is garbage.
But it’s worth it.
Patience, please
This was the message on the big screen last night some time after the last on-track action for the day… expect it to be much worse over the next couple of days.
Any vantage point goes…
Don’t have a ticket to a sold-out day at Albert Park? No stress!
Simply climb a tree or a barrier, it couldn’t be easier.
Fashion comes at a price
The F1 merchandise economy is reasonably disconnected with reality… except for maybe petrol prices.
Some of the highlights to catch our attention include:
$300 for an Alfa Romeo jumper
$350 for an Aston Martin quilt
$90 for a Daniel Ricciardo cap
$130 for a Max Verstappen polo
And all told, they are selling like hotcakes.
Ouch
This is not how you treat a new Porsche…
After deadline yesterday, Matthew Belford found the fence in the Carrera Cup race at turn two.
Unfortunately, the car could not be repaired in time for today.
Media segregation
This weekend, at the Albert Park circuit there are four different media centres.
One is for the F1 media, with that room found on the first floor of the pit building near the pit lane exit.
The next is for F1 photographers, with it found on the infield behind the pit lane.
The above media centre is for national media, which can be found just behind the Supercars pits.
The final media meeting place is in the mobile Supercars media centre on wheels.
Catering in the national media centre has its own international flavour, with coffee poured 14 hours a day during the event.
It feels good. Apparently.
Also, you may notice that TRT were the first attendees today, which is sad.
Legend
Typically, not many visitors come to media centre these days.
Then again, Toby Price isn’t a typical person.
Styling
Remember yesterday’s pontoon hospitality decks floating on the lake?
Here’s a platform that’s a bit closer to the action.
PS. How’s the truck?!
Holey gap
The runoff at the end of the turn 11 escape road looks like the above.
It’s probably not beyond the realms of physics that an errant car could shoot this gap, which is utilised by service vehicles during the event.
Fingers crossed, it never happens…
***king great merch
These lads have absolutely won fashions on the field…
