B6HR: Weekend Notebook

We’re at Bathurst, and the Notebook has made a late weekend comeback.

Here are the best behind the scenes bits from a week on The Mountain, the sort of stuff you won’t find anywhere else.

Don’t forget to hit us up on the socials @theracetorque with your hot takes from the event, with all contributions assisting in putting together the Doric Power Rankings.

Enjoy your Easter Sunday.

…anyhow*

High above the Dipper sits this old billboard, which was seemingly been repurposed from an old Winfield sign, well supported by a reasonably aged gumtree.

Other remnants of the olden days can be found on the back of the wall protecting the run from McPhillamy Park to Skyline, where Camel Filters signwriting can still be visible.

What’s up skip? Trouble down at the old racetrack?

Never in the history of Bathurst have there been so many kangaroos converging on the venue. Hopefully, they stay away from the race track and fences today…

Rubbish binnie

The crowd here this weekend isn’t the biggest, so there hasn’t been a need to wheel out all of the bins into the spectator areas.

Except for this short section of The Chase, which has ALL of the bins lined up neatly…

Food for thought

Looking for the best value, and quality food in all of Bathurst this weekend?

Head to the Bathurst City Red Tops Soccer Club at McPhillamy Park.

Decent tucker at an affordable price. Five stars, would recommend.

Value plus

Also on the topic of value for money, event merchandise paints a massive contrast against the prices asked of punters last weekend at the Grand Prix.

Instead of jackets for $400 and hats for $90, expect to dolly up $65 and $15 respectively.

And they have been doing a roaring trade, especially providing jackets to unsuspecting Queenslanders who don’t know how to pack for the cold…

Moto-works

When we were in Bathurst last December, we reported on the sad state of the Panorama Motorcycle Club’s motocross track.

Now in April, there has been much work afoot, with the facility just over the back of McPhillamy Park receiving a new lease on life.

Big screens

In the Doric Power Rankings from the recent Phillip Island meet, we noted that events of this level need to look after paying patrons better.

At Bathurst this weekend, there are multiple big screens sprinkled around the facility.

Attaboy, well played.

A thing of beauty

Fun fact: if The Race Torque actually owned a Mustang GT, The Race Torque would have a whole lot less time to create content for The Race Torque.

Expect to see a full road test forthcoming from editor Craill, who has utilised his position of power to hog up the driving duties to date.

In the meantime, check out our road trip flavoured podcast we recorded en route to The Mountain, below.

Geological oddity

Near the top of The Mountain, adjacent to the telecommunication towers, you will find the above survey marker.

Please note though – that it is not placed at the precise top of Mount Panorama, which is a little over to the south.

You may notice the Mustang parked in the background – it had zero issues climbing the hill.

But why?

As noted when we posted this to our track walk gallery – clearly something happened for this sign to be posted.

We trust those involved were ok.

Lopped

Shade has taken a hit at McPhillamy Park, with this once significant tree receiving a substantial haircut.

Camping in style

This weekend, the only public camping ground being utilised is the paddock area behind the pit lane, with limited other private options open for business around the track.

One shining beacon is Robbo at the Mount Panorama Resort, whose bonfire has set the standard for all of Bathurst.

Well played.

Missing Pete

Pete Irvine is a staple of motorsport media centres around Australia, where for many of the major events, he runs a tight ship and keeps everyone happy.

Missing in action this weekend, the above poster has been installed in the Bill Tuckey Media Centre lobby.

Subsequently, everyone has been very well behaved.
