DORIC POWER RANKINGS: Bathurst 6 Hour

THE HI-TEC OILS Bathurst 6 Hour was a cracker, well worthy of adding itself to the list of Bathurst classics over the years.

As such, any Bathurst classic needs to be subjected to the TRT Doric Power Rankings treatment so, that’s what we’re doing here..

HOT

1. THAT pass for the win

CLASSIC clutch Bathurst stuff, but this time done at Brock’s Skyline. Insane. Cameron Hill with one of the moves of 2022, and it’s only April.

2. The 6 Hour & Bathurst

IT is now established as an event, with its own vibe and own traditions and it continues to grow every year. We love the 6 Hour, and we reckon you would too. Put it in your diary.

3. Near misses

NEVER before have we seen a race at Bathurst with so many near-misses that didn’t turn into a) massive shunts or b) lengthy Safety Cars.

4. TCR Highlights

TCR cars are pretty wild on the Mountain – across the top they’re full sketch.

5. Indy comes to Bathurst

A NICE tribute to one of the greatest races in the world at another of the world’s greatest races.

6. TV of things

SAVE from the endless complaining about paying for it, the TV coverage was superb – the best yet from ARG’s team. And when you’ve got people like Molly Taylor on board, it has an even bigger meaning for some people, like our friend Andrea below.

7. Trans Am Highlights

“Oh, look how sideways they are… oh wait, that’s just normal Trans Am.”

Trans Am cars are cool.

8. Thomas Sargent

IF you hadn’t heard of this young dynamo before, you sure have now. His pole lap was hugely impressive and his scythe through the field at the start of the race even better. Anchored the race with his mid-race double and then won his biggest ever car race, aged 20, with Cam Hill. Outstanding.

9. Grant Denyer

PERHAPS forgotten sometimes among his TV escapades and general celebrity-ness, but sometimes you get a reminder that Grant Denyer is, fist and foremost, a bloody good racing car driver. Reminded as such with his superb drive on Sunday on his way to the Bathurst podium.

10. 6 Hour stories

REMEMBER the Great Race annuals, the blue books that would delve into details about every car and driver throughout the course of the Bathurst 1000? Wouldn’t work these days for that race, but you could sure as anything write a million words about the behind-the-scenes tales from the 6-Hour pit lane.

From replacement engines driven overnight from Brisbane, to clutch parts flown in from Sydney to the TAFE Smash Repairs team pulling overnighters to teams that barely made it to the track at all, the 6-Hour paddock has it all. Old-school Bathurst.

EXTRA HOT, LITERALLY

How is the scale of this pie warmer? Six hours makes for a long race, and much pastie consumption…

WHAT

NSFW, genuine language warning: Tony Quinn, this is live TV…

But why?

The Easter bunny

In classic Bathurst style…

It wouldn’t be Bathurst without something wild happening. This year a tree fell on the access road to the top of the hill, meaning punters couldn’t climb the Mountain first thing on Sunday morning…

NOT

1. Trans Am shunt

THIS was NASTY and we’re fortunate enough those rigs are very, very tough.

2. BMW reliability

BERIC Lynton said that many of the problems his team had were ones he’d never experienced before – but it was remarkable the number of Bimmers that went down in the early running of the race. Weight in numbers ensured that one of them jagging a result was probably never out of the equation – but it would’ve been nice to see Will Davison and Anton de Pasquale, among others, have a crack.

3. The fog

TWO out of three days were fog-effected. Wonder what sort of role this could play at the 12-Hour come May?

4. The’Rona

SPICY cough K-O’d SVG the week of the event, and TCR’s Fabian Coulthard as well, proving that it still plays a big role in our lives..

5. Ambrose and Miedecke MIA

THE most-hyped combination leading into the race, and the centre of all the event marketing, didn’t even make it to the track in what was undoubtedly a source of frustration for them and the event itself. A massive shame we didn’t get to see what the Mustang was capable of.

6. TCR practice prangs

JAY Hansen wrote off his brand-new Audi in practice, and he wasn’t the only one shunting before it really meant anything in TCR practice at the weekend. Trick for young players at Bathurst – don’t shunt in practice.

7. 6 Hour Pole Disqualification

FAR from ideal following a stunning lap, the lengthy process that ultimately saw Cameron Hill and Tom Sargent excluded from qualifying means the latter’s excellent pole lap will go down in Bathurst history as one of the fastest Production Car laps there that never actually happened.

8. Pulsar carnage

FAR from ideal in the categories first hit-out on the Mountain.

9. Pre-race biff

BATHURST always claims a victim or two before the green drops, and this year was no exception. The #25 Mustang was one of the worst hit, and removed a solid contender for A2 honours early in the running.

10. Hot laps

We understand that it is important to look after corporate types, but running Safety Car hot laps at 10am on Saturday morning while paying spectators are rolling through the gates? They don’t pay for this. Please schedule this stuff for pre or post racing in future, thanks.
