The Backyard Racetracks of Australia

Around the country, 100s of people live the dream with their own private backyard race tracks – have a quick scroll on Google Maps in any direction, and you are sure to find some sneaky motorsport venues.

It’s one of our favourite topics here at The Race Torque, such as this ripper ‘farm access track’ we first spotted in 2020.

So here we keep the theme rolling – we have spotted the following in our travels, or some friends of the site have mailed in some ripper tips… if you know of any we’ve missed, hit us up on @theracetorque with your insight!

This will not shock you: this Mini-Bend has been carved into the South Australian countryside. The Shahin family simply don’t mess around…

When it comes to racetracks, Paul Morris is a certified pro. Sure, the Norwell Motorplex has a lot of options covered, but what if you wanted to try your Sprintcar, or wanted something much closer to home? From his ‘Sugarbowl’ speedway oval to truly backyard go karts, the Dude is never ever very far away from motorsport…

This go kart track reportedly sold for $9,000,000 in 2019, which is quite expensive for a go kart track. But then again, it was probably a fair price for a mansion this expansive

This backyard speedway for sidecars is very neatly presented and certainly optimises every square foot of this Queensland backyard.

Hands up, who wouldn’t love an entire rally super special stage in your back paddock? This one is an absolute corker…

This front yard go kart track on the northside of Brisbane has forever been a head-turner for passing motorists – it’s a helluva layout.

Practice your go karting skills on the same track Jack Doohan honed his craft.

Fortunately, you could call this one your own, Mick has listed the property for sale… we’d buy it simply for the kart track and the boy’s toys shed.

At Pine Creek, halfway between Darwin and Katherine, this little go kart track certainly nestles into the scenery. Whilst not strictly backyard, it ticks enough boxes to make this list…

The Granny Bowl is passed by tens of thousands of cars daily, but almost none of them will be aware of the short go kart oval just off the Bruce Highway.

The thing we love about this is that they have kept reinventing the oval multiple times until they have found a layout they like.

Another go kart oval, this one with a 110m long pole line, is a true race around the clothesline that we’re here for.

We know nothing of this little layout near Orange, but we reckon they would have the best weekends ever…

This ripper near Coonabarabran comes complete with a 1km long bitumen circuit built on the 1,000 acre property. It recently sold for around $740,000.

This Tasmanian ripper has something for every family member. Just ace.

Found at Ma Ma Creek just outside of Gatton, the go kart track attached to this home is fully licensed and used for genuine racing – that’s living the dream!
