The Melbourne-based squad has confirmed today their intent to sell their remaining fleet of 15 S5000 racers.
The team confirmed by a statement released today that they will divest themselves of their fleet of cars that contested the S5000 championship between 2019 and 2023.
It comes with a large spares inventory and the team are also open to the sale of individual or multiple chassis both here and abroad.
“The significant number of available S5000 chassis and supporting infrastructure offers the potential for interested parties to repurpose S5000 as the basis for a new open wheel racing championship anywhere in the world,” the team explained.
“The decision to sell its fleet of S5000 racecars comes as GRM focuses its competition and engineering operations on running multiple cars in the Trico Trans Am Series, and the ongoing development and competition program of the Peugeot 308 P51 racecar in the TCR Australia Series.
“Additionally, GRM continues to remain active in providing a range of engineering and manufacturing services to various customers throughout the Australian motorsport industry.”
Built in Melbourne, Australia by GRM, the S5000 racecar is a combination of an FIA-homologated monocoque produced by Onroak-Ligier (JSF3 chassis), mated to a 5.2-litre Ford-based V8 engine.
A high proportion of components homologated for the S5000 racecar were designed and built by leading Australian motorsport suppliers and GRM in-house.
Notable drivers to have raced in S5000 include Formula 1 stars Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella, along with leading Supercars drivers Will Brown, Thomas Randle and James Golding.
Three S5000 championships were held between 2021 and 2023, won by Joey Mawson (2021-22) and Aaron Cameron (2023). Throughout this period, S5000 raced for the Australian Drivers’ Championship and Motorsport Australia Gold Star – inaugurated in 1957 as the most prestigious award for domestic open wheel racing in Australia.
The series was a support category to the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in 2020 – practicing and qualifying on Thursday prior to the event’s Friday cancellation – before returning in 2022 to deliver a full weekend of racing on the Albert Park Circuit.
Between 1996 and 2020, GRM competed in Supercars/the Australian Touring Car Championship, building 24 Supercars chassis including the 2000 Bathurst 1000-winning Holden Commodore driven by Garth Tander and Jason Bargwanna and multiple chassis as part of Volvo and Polestar’s tenure in the Supercars category from 2014 to 2016.
