Hazelwood Sweeps Race Tasmania

REIGNING Trico Trans Am Series champion Todd Hazelwood swept all before him at the opening round of the 2025 season, claiming four victories from pole position at Hi-Tec Oils Race Tasmania from Symmons Plains Raceway.

Steering clear of the trouble that claimed many competitors, the current Bathurst 1000 champion led home Ben Grice and Tom Davies in the overall point score for the event.

“That’s the perfect weekend, four wins, pole position, the championship lead, I don’t think I’ve done that in a while,” said Hazelwood.

“A massive thanks to my whole TFH Racing crew; we had a pretty rough preparation coming here – we were a little bit worried coming here, to be honest.

“Every session we are tuning this car, whether it is a little bit of ride height, a little bit of spring… that last race we weren’t quite happy with the car, we made a couple of changes, and when you’ve been leading all weekend, the last thing you want to do is make changes.

“You’ve got to always keep moving forward, because these guys behind me are pushing hard as well.”

The fourth and final race for the event started in sensational circumstances with a heavy opening lap accident.

Exiting the first sequence of corners, a squeeze between the leaders resulted in contact between Garry Rogers Motorsport stablemates James Moffat (LMCT+ Mustang) and Lachlan Evennett (CAMM Mustang), which saw the latter made hefty rearward contact with the concrete wall before the bridge.

The 16-year-old emerged from the wrecked CAMM Mustang unaided, with the safety car called onto the circuit.

From the restart on lap four, Nathan Herne dropped positions when his BlueGold Industries Mustang lost engine power.

Out in front, Hazelwood’s Mustang led Ben Grice (All American Drivelines Mustang) in resuming their battle from the third race.

Robbie Farr (Hi-Tec Oils Camaro) spun at turn six on lap eight, while two laps later, both Jack Smith (SCT Logistics Mustang) and Adam Garwood (Garwood Motorsport Mustang) spun at the Hairpin.

On the 12th circuit, Nash Morris (Norwell Motorplex Mustang) made it past Tom Davies (GRM Mustang) for third on the back straight.

The action then came thick and fast, with Des Collier (TFH Racing Mustang) and Domain Ramsey (C&H Trucking Camaro) spinning at opposing ends of the circuit before Joshua Webster (Auto Fix Mustang) spun at the Hairpin, with Ramsey having his second moment in quick succession.

The safety car was called upon again on lap 15 to recover Webster’s car from the circuit.

A one-lap sprint to the finish ensued when the safety car ended, with Hazelwood setting sail to the chequered flag.

Grice resisted the advances of Morris in the sprint to the finish, with Moffat fourth ahead of Jordan Cox (Schaeffler Mustang), Ben Bargwanna (Hangcha Racing Mustang), Josh Haynes (Herzog Steel Mustang), Tom Davies (GRM Mustang), who lost ground on the final circuit, then Elliot Barbour (Pioneer DJ Camaro), with Jackson Rice (Dream Racing Australia Mustang) rounding out the top-ten.

Davies also claimed the Young Gun award for the weekend.

By winning three of the four Pro-Am races, including the finale, Mark Bailey claimed category honours in the Jax Tyres Mustang from John Holinger (Holinger Racing Mustang) and Graham Cheney (IES Motorsports Camaro).

Earlier in the weekend, Hazelwood was convincing in claiming victory in the first three races after securing the pole position.

The opening lap of the third heat featured a significant pile-up, which saw the race red-flagged.

All drivers emerged from the melee uninjured.

The next stop for the Trico Trans Am Series is the spiritual home of Australian motorsport, Mount Panorama, with the class set to star at the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour from April 18-20.
