Herne: Track Time and the Top of the Mountain Key

Two-time Trico Trans Am Series champion Nathan Herne seeks a clean weekend of racing at Mount Panorama, as 41 of the V8-powered cars assemble at the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.
With the Trans Am Series combined with the TFH Hire TA2 Muscle Car Series Presented by Maritimo Luxury Yachts, the record field is set for four sessions over the three-day event.
Coming into the weekend fifth in the Trans Am point standings after the opening round in Tasmania, Herne is looking to push the BlueGold Industries Ford Mustang to the front.
“It’s been a big turnaround after Tasmania, we had three weeks pretty much, once the truck got back, we had a week and a half,” said Herne.
“Here at Bathurst, 41 cars, a huge field, garages all the way down to Mountain Straight… any time you get to go to Bathurst in a V8 is awesome, I’m looking forward to the weekend.
“Hopefully, we just get track time. We’ve only got four sessions the whole weekend, so there’s going to be a lot of sitting around, hurrying up, and waiting, to be honest.
“Fingers crossed when we get out there, everyone stays on track and we can get some clean green racing in.
“It will be good to sort out the championship a bit more, for me, round one wasn’t ideal, but we’ll move on, and round two is going to be a lot better.”
On the keys to getting a Trans Am car around Mount Panorama quickly, there’s one focus area for Herne.
“I’m not going to quote James Hunt, but it’s something along those lines!” Said Herne.
“Around the top, you’ve really just got to hang on, pull the belts tight and scrape the fence any time you can.
“Around the top, you can really make up a lot of time around here, these things are so much fun.
“That’s where I focus, even if I’m slow down the bottom, I’d rather be fast up the top, if only for the old ego side of things.”
On-track running for the Trico Trans Am Series will feature a lone 30-minute-long practice session tomorrow, and twin 15-minute qualifying sessions on Saturday morning, with the field to be split on practice times.
The first 45-minute-long race kicks off at 2:05pm Saturday, with the second race slated for 9:55am Sunday.
Viewers at home can watch qualifying via Facebook and YouTube streams, the Saturday race via SBS One, Fox Sports or Kayo, and the Sunday race via Fox Sports or Kayo.
