Evennett back on track for Bathurst

FOLLOWING a hefty shunt at the end of the Symmons Plains round, Trico Trans Am rookie sensation Lachlan Evennett is set to return to action at Mount Panorama, with the Garry Rogers Motorsport crew completing a significant rebuild on his battered Mustang.
Following contact with GRM stablemate James Moffat, the CAMM Racing Mustang spun to the left as the field ran towards the bridge on the opening lap of the fourth race for the weekend.
The car subsequently made hard rearward contact against an unprotected concrete wall, with the boot crushed back to the rear window, while damage to the roof panel was also visible.
Fortunately, damage to the car proved to be relatively light.
An investigation into the accident, along with other judicial matters arising from the race, will be concluded at Bathurst.
“It was a little bit bent at the back, but we’re fixing it up now, and it should be right to rock and roll for Bathurst,” said Stefan Millard, GRM Team Manager.
“We had to replace a couple of bars in the chassis, but it was nothing too serious – it probably looked worse than it really was.
“The chassis isolated it pretty well and absorbed the energy of the crash, the impact hasn’t flowed through the whole car, which is nice – it bent that rear section, and that’s about it, which is a pleasant surprise.”
One downside of the accident is that the repaired car will not be tested prior to returning to the track at Bathurst next Friday.
Up until the accident at Symmons Plains, Evennett had been enjoying a strong introduction to the category.
After qualifying in fourth, he earned finishes of fourth, seventh and sixth in the opening three races.
Prior to joining the Trans Am Series, the 16-year-old grade 12 student from Townsville raced in the Toyota GR Cup both here and in New Zealand, while he has also been a podium performer in Formula Ford competition.
At the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour, the Trico Trans Am Series is scheduled to have a pair of 45-minute-long races, with further information on the event available at bathurst6hour.com.au.
