Moffat tops Bathurst Practice

JUST like the opening round of the Trico Trans Am Series at Symmons Plains Raceway, James Moffat has placed the LMCT+ Mustang on top of the practice timesheet at Mount Panorama, as a 41-strong field took to the circuit.
Coming into the weekend fifth in the standings, Moffat is looking for a big weekend to get his championship chase back on track, with the multiple Bathurst 1000 podium finisher setting a benchmark time of 2:11.8440sec, some 0.1468sec clear of the field.
Second in the session was Moffat’s GRM stablemate James Golding (CTE Mustang), ahead of Nash Morris (Norwell Motorplex Mustang).
Tom Davies continued his strong form from Tasmania, placing the third of the GRM Mustangs fourth, ahead of two-time series champion Nathan Herne (BlueGold Industries Mustang).
Ben Grice (All American Drivelines Mustang) comes into the event second in points, and he placed sixth in the session, ahead of reigning series and Bathurst 1000 champion Todd Hazelwood (TFH Racing Mustang) and Elliot Barbour, with the Shure Racing entry the highest placed Camaro.
Meanwhile, Jarrod Hughes (IES Motorsports Camaro) placed ninth and was the first of the 16 TFH Hire TA2 Muscle Car Series Presented by Maritimo Luxury Yachts entries in the field.
Tenth overall in the session was Ben Bargwanna aboard the Hangcha Racing Mustang.
In the ever-competitive Pro-Am ranks, Josh Thomas (TFH Racing Mustang) topped the class with the overall 14th fastest time.
The 30-minute-long session was interrupted twice for red flags.
The first came after 12 minutes of running when Grice temporarily stopped at The Cutting and was able to return to the pits safely.
Subsequently, within six minutes of the chequered flag, Ben Gomersall came unstuck in the UNIT Racing Mustang and made contact with the wall at the entry to the Forrest’s Elbow, with the damage relatively light.
The session, however, was not restarted.
The TFH Racing Mustang of debutant Diesel Thomas also returned to the pits on a tilt tray, although with no visible damage.
Tomorrow, the field will be split into faster and slower halves for qualifying from 10:20am ahead of the weekend’s opening race at 2:05pm
The final 45-minute race of the weekend is set for 9:55am Sunday as the curtain raiser for the Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.
Saturday’s qualifying sessions will be streamed live via Facebook and YouTube, with the opening race available on SBS One, Fox Sports and Kayo, with the Sunday finale viewable via Fox Sports and Kayo.
