#TBT “THEY’RE ALL IN THE FENCE”

WE could have entitled this post “2010 V8 Supercars Homebush Saturday”, but we figured that the above heading would make it very obvious…

A tumultuous 2010 V8 Supercars season came down to the finale on the streets of Sydney Olympic Park, with James Courtney, Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom all in the calculations to claim the title.

For The Race Torque’s photographer, who was camped out for the race at turn one, about 350m from the wall into which everyone crashed, it was a surreal experience.

On that fateful lap 59 restart, turn one was practically bone dry, and with no public address system or big screen, we would have been completely in the dark of the unfolding shenanigans if it wasn’t for the mixed screams/cheers from the nearby grandstand, which was furnished with CC TV.

The three drivers listed above were joined in the fence by Shane Van Gisbergen, Craig Lowndes, Todd Kelly, Will Davison, Garth Tander, Alex Davison and Andrew Jones.

As fate would have it, the DJR crew did a wonderful job with sticky tape (above) that saw Courtney emerge 7 laps down on the leaders, but capable of being classified a finisher, and in the points, in 15th position.

While Winterbottom wasn’t to see the track again that afternoon, Whincup returned to the action for the final tour (final image in sequence), however, with the time of his repairs added to his last lap, the defending series champion failed to be classified in the final run down.

For the record, Jonathon Webb scored the win from Jason Bright and Rick Kelly, with Courtney limping through the Sunday race to claim the overall series crown.
